This is the right time of year to get out and see migratory birds. The white pelicans are out in force at Sepulveda Basin, and everywhere you go it seems that there are more interesting species to be found. Here's a terrific county by county birding guide to California, thanks to the efforts of Don Roberson and friends.

It's the end of September - the days are now officially shorter than the nights - and despite the early Santa Ana winds, it's looking to be a beautiful autumn. The Sierra Club has a terrific site with all of the upcoming outings in and around Los Angeles. Here's their perpetual listing of Tomorrow's Events.

The Descanso Gardens Festival of Flowers is going on now. April and May are the most vibrant months at Descanso, with Azaleas, Camellias, Roses, Irises, and wildflowers all in bloom. Plus, now is a wonderful time to catch a glimpse of migratory birds. Grosbeaks, flycatchers, and swallows should be visible, and keep an eye out for the bright blue Lazuli Bunting. Bring your camera.
